The Othaya Farmers Co-Operative Society has approximately 1000 members who farm in the Nyeri Region. The area known for its rich red volcanic soils that are also rich in organic matter - ideal for the coffee varietals grown. Good rainfall; 1500mm a year add to this positive environment. Most of the farms cultivate about 85 hectares of coffee.
At harvesting time, only ripe, red cherries are harvested by hand and delivered to the mill the same day for processing. Cherry sorting is done at the mill, over and under ripe cherries are removed along with any other debris such as sticks, twigs etc. The mill uses clean river water for processing, the water re-circulated before disposal into seepage pits. In the past, water had been left to flow back into rivers causing massive pollution issues.
Once the mill processing is completed, the coffee is laid out on raised beds for drying. Once drying cycle is completed, coffee then goes for secondary processing to have the parchment removed, screening to 18+ and final packaging.
